Biofeme capsules with Evening Primrose and Borage oil
Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis) is a plant originally found in Mexico and Central America. It is named after the yellow flowers that open in the evening and close early in the morning. Evening Primrose is one of the most fascinating plants in the history of medicine. Indigenous people have used it in addition to cooking and for various soothing purposes. It was brought to Europe in the 18th century, when only botanists were aware of its benefits, but received the first scientific confirmation in 1917 when they discovered that the oil of this plant was rich in omega 6 gamma-linolenic acid.
Borage (Borago officinalis) is a plant with a characteristic stellar bluish color. It is native to the Mediterranean and southern Europe but is cultivated worldwide. Often used by the Romans, it was also popular in the Middle Ages.
Evening Primrose oil and Borage oil are obtained by cold pressing the seeds. They are a great source of omega 6 fatty acids. Their secret is in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA); Evening Primrose oil contains 9% and Borage oil as much as 20%.
The most important omega 6 fatty acids are:
linoleic acid (LA),
gamma linolenic acid (GLA),
arachidonic acid (AA).
LA is considered an essential fatty acid that cannot be synthesized by the human body, while GLA and AA can be obtained from linoleic acid. However, in some situations and under the influence of many factors, this conversion can be difficult. As a result, gamma linolenic acid can be ingested to some extent with vegetable oils.
